Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away as a Carnival barker as a young girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. But she quit school only after two years to pursue an acting career. The path was difficult to take. While she was offered an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. Her next job was as a "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and relocated to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. She graduated with a degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
